Nextel Buys From Lucent

Nextel Communications Inc., a wireless telephone company, said yesterday that it would purchase high-capacity switches from Lucent Technologies Inc. for use in its digital wireless network. Terms were not disclosed for the agreement, which is the first between the companies. At least 10 of Lucent's switches will be used in Nextel's iDEN network, Nextel said. The switches are expected to be installed by the end of the current year, and will boost calling capacity while reducing equipment and operating costs, according to Nextel.
