Time magazine has printed a news story disclosing that fighting black anti-Semitism by asking black leaders to stand against it is a way of "enforcing racial correctness" and, "it might be argued, is just another kind of bigotry." Yes, that is what Time actually says. Page 37, issue predated Feb. 7. In its news section is a story about how an anti-Semitic speech made by a "semi-obscure" spokesman of the Nation of Islam before just a "few dozen" college students is made into a big deal. It becomes pressure against "black leaders across the country," and that "rankles" with "some" blacks. It comes at a bad time for black-Jewish relations, says Time, particularly in New York, always "fretting" about race.

AMGEN SHARES FALL ON EARNINGS DISAPPOINTMENT

Shares of Amgen Inc. fell $3 yesterday, to $44, after the company reported earnings that were lower than expected. Amgen was by far the most active stock in Nasdaq trading, where more than 11.7 million shares changed hands. In earlier trading, shares fell as much as $5. Amgen is a biotechnology company based in Thousand Oaks, Calif. After the close of trading on Tuesday, it reported earnings of 64 cents a share for the fourth quarter, less than analysts' estimate of 66 cents a share.

AIR PRODUCTS TO INVEST $270 MILLION IN CALIFORNIA

Air Products and Chemicals Inc. said yesterday that it would invest $270 million in eight new and existing plants in California in the next two years. Air Products, an Allentown, Pa., supplier of industrial gases and related equipment, said it would build three hydrogen plants to provide nearly 200 million standard cubic feet of hydrogen a day for the processing of clean fuels.

THERMO ELECTRON UNITS BUYING BAKER HUGHES BUSINESSES

The Thermo Electron Corporation of Waltham, Mass., said yesterday that two of its publicly traded subsidiaries would buy six businesses from Baker Hughes Inc. of Houston for about $134 million. Thermo Instrument Systems Inc., which makes environmental monitoring instruments, will buy Environtech Controls, Noran Instruments, TN Technologies and Tremetrics for about $93 million. The businesses have combined annual sales of $129 million. Thermedics Inc., a maker of medical products and electronic detection equipment, will buy Ramsey Technologies and Epsilon Industrial for about $41 million. Ramsey makes equipment for inspecting bulk materials and packaged goods, and Epsilon designs products for measuring the moisture content in materials. The two companies had combined sales of $59 million in the year ended in September.

REGAL CINEMAS TO GROW IN SOUTHERN MOVIE CHAIN DEAL

Regal Cinemas Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn., said yesterday that it was acquiring Litchfield Theaters Ltd. for about $63.8 million in stock, increasing the number of movie screens it owns in the South. Litchfield, based in Pawleys Island, S.C., operates 24 theaters with 172 screens in six Southern states. Regal, in business since 1989, owns 48 multiscreen theaters with 372 screens in 10 Eastern states. Regal is buying Litchfield in exchange for 2.5 million of its shares, which were up $2.75, at $25.75, in Nasdaq trading.

SHARP TO EXPAND U.S. LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY PLANT

The Sharp Corporation of Japan said yesterday that it would spend $30 million to expand a liquid crystal display panel manufacturing plant in Camas, Wash., adding about 160 jobs. The plant will have the capacity to produce 10,000 active-matrix color LCD panels a month when it opens in October, said Joseph Pinzone, human resources director at the Sharp Microelectronics Technology unit. The LCD screens will be sold to makers of laptop and notebook computers and will also be used in Sharp products, including camcorders. The expansion will make it the company's only plant outside Japan to make active-matrix panels.

S.E.C. CAN SEIZE BRITISH ASSETS OF CRAZY EDDIE'S FOUNDER

A British court gave the Securities and Exchange Commission the right to confiscate any money that Eddie Antar, the founder of Crazy Eddie Inc., has hidden in Britain, the S.E.C. said yesterday. The order follows an S.E.C. civil suit filed in Britain in 1992 that would force Mr. Antar to turn over the money to United States authorities. Mr. Antar has appealed the decision.

PAINE WEBBER SETS 3-FOR-2 STOCK SPLIT AND DIVIDEND RISE

Paine Webber Group Inc. said yesterday that it would split its common stock 3 for 2 and raise the effective dividend on the stock by 20 percent. Paine Webber, the nation's seventh-largest securities firm, said the split would be paid March 10 for holders of record Feb. 17. It will pay a dividend of 12 cents a share on post-split shares April 18 to holders of record March 28. Adjusted for the split, the company now pays 10 cents a share.
