Louis Liotta, a New York Post photographer for 48 years until his union went on strike last fall, happened to be driving across the Brooklyn Bridge on Tuesday morning, his cameras with him. He was on his way to visit a friend at his old newspaper. That was how The Post happened to get the best photographs in the city of the aftermath of the Brooklyn Bridge shooting, which filled The Post's front three pages yesterday. It was also how Mr. Liotta, at 72 years of age, got his job back.

Chinese Government Shows Video Of 4 Prisoners Mentioned by U.S.

A top Government spokesman gathered several American journalists today and played them a videotape purporting to show that four leading political prisoners were in good health. By showing the tape, the Chinese leadership appears to be trying to deflect criticism about how it treats political prisoners. The screening also coincides with the visit to Beijing of the State Department's chief human rights official, John Shattuck, who is preparing the agenda for Secretary of State Warren Christopher's first visit here.

Scientists Share in Pain Of Experiment Debates

The Clinton Administration's investigation of experiments in which Americans may have been unwittingly exposed to radiation has turned into a searing experience not only for the families involved but also for the scientists who conducted the research and the universities where the studies took place. Some of the nation's most prominent universities have been besieged with questions and criticism since December, when Energy Secretary Hazel R. O'Leary announced that her department would investigate the Government's cold war radiation experiments on people. In response, some universities have expressed regret even as they say the Government and the news media are failing to make distinctions about who sponsored the research and the levels of radiation involved.

Goodyear Chief's Bonus

The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company paid Stanley Gault, the chairman and chief executive, a bonus of more than $1 million in 1993, the company's preliminary proxy statement shows. Mr. Gault received an incentive bonus of $1.02 million, up 7.8 percent from the $945,000 bonus he got in 1992.

BANK OF BOSTON TO ACQUIRE PIONEER FINANCIAL

The Bank of Boston Corporation said yesterday that it had agreed to acquire Pioneer Financial, a privately held cooperative bank, for $118 million in cash. Pioneer Financial, which operates 20 branches in Middlesex County, Mass., has $773 million in assets and $720 million in deposits. The transaction was expected to be completed in the second half of the year. Bank of Boston, with assets of $40.6 billion as of Dec. 31, provides financial services to individual, corporate, institutional and government customers worldwide.

NATIONAL INTERGROUP SEEKS REMAINDER OF FOXMEYER

National Intergroup Inc. said yesterday that it had offered to acquire the remaining 19.5 percent stake, or 5.51 million shares, of the Foxmeyer Corporation that it does not already own in exchange for $81.3 million in notes. National Intergroup, based in Dallas, said Foxmeyer shareholders would receive $14.75 face amount of new 8.25 percent senior notes due in 2004. Shares of Foxmeyer rose 37.5 cents, to $13.875, on the New York Stock Exchange, and shares of National Intergroup were up 50 cents, to $16.25. National Intergroup, based in Dallas, distributes pharmaceuticals through Foxmeyer. The board of Foxmeyer formed a special committee of directors unaffiliated with National Intergroup to consider the proposal.

HANSON SELLS STAKE IN TEXAS CONCRETE PLANTS

Hanson P.L.C. said yesterday that it had sold its 50 percent stake in the North Texas Cement Company and 15 ready-mix concrete plants in the Dallas-Fort Worth region for $54 million. The Ash Grove Cement Company bought North Texas Cement, while Pioneer Concrete of Texas Inc. bought the 15 plants. The plants were acquired by Hanson as part of the acquisition of Beazer P.L.C. in 1991. The plants reported operating profit of $3 million on sales of $51 million for the year ending Sept. 30.

ALCAN SEEKS BUYER FOR BUILDING PRODUCTS UNITS

Alcan Aluminium Ltd. put its North American building products businesses up for sale yesterday, after a cost-cutting review. The company said it had hired the CS First Boston Corporation to explore options for the sale of Alcan Building Products (Canada) and Alcan Building Products (U.S.A.), a division of the Alcan Aluminum Corporation. The units employ about 1,800 people at 18 plants and 47 sales and distribution centers. Alcan, based in Montreal, said the two divisions generated about $425 million in revenue in 1993. The divisions' products include residential siding, roofing, windows, shutters, carports and patio covers. The company's shares rose 75 cents, to $23.625, on the New York Stock Exchange.

UNITED AIRLINES BREAKS GROUND ON MAINTENANCE CENTER

United Airlines Inc. formally dedicated its $800 million aircraft maintenance center in Indianapolis yesterday. The center, which will employ 6,300 people when completed in 2004, will include 11 hangars with 18 aircraft bays, as well as various support facilities and shops. The first hangar will be in operation later this month, the company said. The center will handle all United's Boeing 737 and 757 aircraft for a two-to-three-day maintenance check every 13 months to 15 months. In addition, each aircraft will undergo a heavy maintenance visit every four years.
